The Spree headband is an exciting innovation in fitness monitoring technology. It is an incredibly advanced and very sophisticated fitness tracker for those who are serious about their fitness. We’ve had smartphones, smart TVs, smart computers, smart watches, and now we have the smart Spree heart rate monitor. Offered by Spree Sports, this is the world’s most intelligent fitness monitor. It is very different from the usual offerings. This Spree headband review will look at what makes it so different to anything else on the market.
The Spree fitness monitor has been called “revolutionary” because it is way ahead of the traditional heart rate monitors we have been using. It looks so futuristic, you would be excused for thinking it was some device out of Star Trek.
Why is the Spree headband so different?
Firstly, it is a clever device which is designed and marketed to be worn as a headband, although it can be customized to be worn on the arm. But it is not so much the design that has blown all its competitors out of the water. The accuracy of the data is far superior to that of chest and wrist monitors. It uses biosensor technology to accurately measure heart rate, calories burned, distance, time, speed, optimum performance zone, and for the first time, skin temperature, the feature that makes it stand out from the crowd.
It takes real time data while you workout, which is then streamed via Bluetooth to a smartphone app. By synchronising it with your smartphone, you can keep a visual track of all your workouts and level of exertion, so you can easily see your progress with each workout.
Other heart rate monitors use heart rate or the number of steps to guesstimate the number of calories burned. The Spree fitness headband provides more accurate data. It uses sophisticated plethysmograph technology to track the size of your blood vessels by shining a miniature light through your skin and then using a light sensor to read the reflection.
It takes heart rate and motion data and combines many personal metrics including your age, sex, height, weight and for the first time, skin temperature in order to give you accurate personal readings, not a guesstimate. The Spree heart monitor uses Performance Optimization Device (POD) in order to provide the most accurate and comprehensive performance tracking to date. It is the world’s first fitness intelligence tool.
The ultimate strapless monitor: with the Spree Smart Headband, you can say goodbye to chest straps for good!
Until now, those really wanting more accurate data had to rely on chest straps to measure heart rate. Many people say the strapless monitors are not as accurate as the chest straps. However, most people hate wearing the chest straps because they are often uncomfortable and fiddly. Now with the introduction of the Spree headband, you can throw away those chest straps for good, and have both comfort and high level accuracy not found in any other fitness tracker.
The reason the Spree headband is designed to be worn around your head is because it gives you more accurate readings. It provides accurate body temperature by taking it from blood flow to the forehead. It has long been known that one of the best places to measure blood flow is the forehead.
Being provided with real time accurate personal data makes it so much easier to identify and work on your weaknesses to achieve your fitness goals.
Why tracking body temperature during exercise is important
Increased body temperature during exercise affects metabolism and how efficiently your muscles work. As body temperature rises, blood flow is directed to peripheral tissues to cool you down. This means there is less blood going to your heart, muscles and other organs. Less blood means less oxygen. Your body also gets dehydrated.
So the focus of your body shifts from oxyginating and working out the heart and muscles to dealing with overheating and dehydration issues. This is not what you want your body to concentrate on during exercise.
Therefore tracking your body temperature while exercising with the Spree heart rate monitor is vital to keep you safely within your optimal zone and avoid overheating and dehydration.
The headband device is made from silicone rubber and is water resistant which keeps sweat away from your eyes. It is comfortable to wear and stays in place. It is also very light and you hardly notice it’s there. Wearing the Spree fitness monitor will get you noticed, and make you the star attraction at the gym.
The Spree headband is great for monitoring your performance and making sure you stay within your optimal zone while you are running, jogging, cycling, doing gym workouts, and any sport or activity. It also looks good on both men and women.
Ok, so what are the cons?
The Spree sports headband was pricey at $300 when it was first introduced to the market, especially for someone who just wanted basic information. However, recently, the price has come down considerably, which makes this a brilliant buy.
This next point may be more of an issue for women, perhaps. Currently, at the time of writing this, there is not much color choice. Why have Spree Sports not provided some attractive color selection to cordinate with fitness outfits? People who love color will be disappointed that the headband only comes in black and grey. But Spree have confirmed that they will be bringing out new colors soon. The headband will soon be made available in hot pink and teal.
The biggest worry with a lot of people is that they will feel self conscious about wearing a headband. However, since it comes in dark colors and it isn’t bulky, it may not be as noticeable when you put it on. You can also wear a baseball cap, so it’s not so visible. The Spree team say that the actual monitoring device just snaps into the headband and can be taken off and worn on the arm, so you don’t actually have to wear it with the headband.
Love the technology but can’t be seen wearing a headband?
For those people who are just simply too self conscious or uncomfortable with a headband, Spree have introduced the Spree SmartCap as an alternative to the handband.
The Spree SmartCap provides you with the same monitoring technology and data as the headband, but incorporated into a sports cap. This will stop you feeling self- conscious because it looks just like a regular cap, and will give you added protection from the sun and rain. If you are used to wearing a cap, then this is ideal for you.
SmartCap comes in Black.
Other than bringing out innovative fitness products to the market, I also really love that Spree Sports listen to customer feedback and respond with what their customers are asking for, hence the introduction of new the Spree SmartCap for people who just can’t handle wearing a headband.
Biometric data from the headband monitor is simultaneously streamed toyour smart phone app via Bluetooth Smart technology. The custom Spree App is for iOS, iPhone 4S/5/5S/5C iPod/iPad with Bluetooth Smart/BLE and selected iOS, Android and Windows third-party apps (for Bluetooth Smart devices)
Spree is compatible with the most popular third party apps written for iOS and Android which include MapMyRun, Runtastic, Runkeeperand others.
The Spree headband has a battery life of 8 hours. When you don’t use it, the battery can last up to 7 days. It also has a smart on/off function to save your battery. The unit will turn itself on when it is on your forehead while you are working out and will turn itself off when you take it off.
Is the Spree heart rate monitor worth buying?
At the end of the day, the level of accuracy of the Spree headband monitor is great, if you can get past wearing a headband.
If you train for competitive sports, you are a runner, an athelete, a cyclist or a serious health and fitness nut, and you want the latest technology, then this is perfect for you. The Spree heart rate monitor can measure your heart rate, movement and body temperature to provide you with the personal accurate data you need in order to streamline your exercise to your personal level of intensity that will enable you to easily meet your goals.
This is a serious monitoring device that will take your fitness performance to the next level. It also makes a great gift to the fitness enthusiasts in your life!
If you really love the sound of the technology but don’t see yourself wearing a headband, you don’t have to feel left out, go for the SmartCap instead.
But if your only exercise is a gentle jog while taking the dog for a walk, and you are not too bothered with sharp accuracy, then perhaps one of the wrist monitors may be more suitable.
I hope our Spree headband review has given you all the information you need to decide if it’s for you or not.
